The moonpool: a safety asset

Conducting a diving support operation, launching an ROV¹ or carrying out interventions on a well can be tricky when the sea conditions are deteriorating. That's why some vessels are equipped with a moonpool.

The moonpool passes right through the vessel's hull amidships, where movements are minimal. It improves reliability and thus promotes operational continuity. "The launching of ROVs and the use of special equipment can be carried out with confidence, even if the weather is unfavorable," explains Jean-Charles Audoin, Project Manager Subsea Services.

3 IMR vessels in the BOURBON fleet are now equipped with moonpools - the Bourbon Evolution 804, the Southern Ocean and the Vissolela - but every vessel in the Bourbon Evolution series was designed to be capable of being retrofitted with one after commissioning, based on client needs. Such a transformation would require a month of engineering, followed by a month of work.

The modular moonpool on the Bourbon Evolution 804 features an opening that can range between 3 x 3m to 9 x 9m. The four panels covering it are also very resilient. After closing the moonpool, the loading capacity of the deck remains at its maximum, and the vessel can conduct its operational missions in all sea conditions, whether the moonpool is in use or not.
