From the merchant marine to offshore oil and gas

Meeting with with Konstantin Novichenko, Junior DPO (Dynamic Positioning Officer).

Just a few years ago, Konstantin Novichenko never imagined he would be in offshore oil and gas marine services. Yet, at the age of 28, the former Chief Officer dof the merchant marine is now Junior Dynamic Positioning Officer (DPO) on a Bourbon Liberty 235, an AHTS (Anchor Handling Tugs Supply) vessel.

The taste for a challenge

Was it a difficult transition? "The taste for a challenge made me want to try it,", he says. "I had heard of offshore oil and gas, and its challenges, but most of all, it's totally different world compared to the merchant marine".

Nothing could discourage Konstantin, quite the contrary. In July 2014, he responded to a job posting on the BOURBON website. "It was for a two month mission, during which we were onboard 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Despite my misgivings, I didn't let the opportunity slip by me!" he explained. "I knew that this unique experience could open a lot of doors for me..."

Always learning

In order to set sail, in August 2014, Konstantin had to undergo special training. Starting with the theoretical and practical courses, taught at the BOURBON Training Center Ukraine. "Then I took an exam, after which I received the Full DPO certification, issued by the Nautical Institute of London. It was very intense, with lots of information to absorb, but obviously essential information! "

Furthermore, the training does not stop there. "It's a job that's learned in the field. While onboard, I continue to educate myself because I aim to make DP Officer," Konstantin said. However he's supported by the entire crew on board, including the captain, "More than a colleague, he's a friend," he says.

Worth effort

Konstantin Novichenko clearly remembers his 1st experience at sea. "l needed to get used to steering the vessel, handling the navigation equipment. It's very different from what I had experienced on a merchant vessel." But for Konstantin, there's no longer any doubt: "I made the choice of offshore oil and gas marine services, and I intend to continue my career! BOURBON is a group that offers extraordinary opportunities for young people, while giving them the means to succeed. I am very happy to have joined this family," he concluded.
