The Bourbon Subsea Services turnkey offer includes:

  • installation and pre-tensioning of mooring lines,
  • towage of floats to the site,
  • connection of the floats to the mooring lines
  • installation of energy export cables, operation assisted by ROVs.

Our expertise in each of these areas enables us to deliver operational excellence at every phase of a project: carrying out operations to the highest safety standards, within budget and time allowed in order to limit production shutdowns, and commissioning of new turbines to ensure the start of production as soon as possible.

Tetraspar operation

TetraSpar is the fifth floating wind turbine project installed by Bourbon Subsea Services since the diversification of its activities into renewable energies in 2011. It demonstrates the team's expertise in the engineering and installation of floating wind farms, as well as its ability to support the design phases with innovative low-cost solutions to meet technical challenges.

The float is indeed particularly innovative compared to the prototypes already installed in the world. The main characteristic of the TetraSpar foundation concept is its modular arrangement in "blocks": each foundation is in fact assembled from tubular steel modules, most of which are common to all the configurations. Manufacturing of these modules takes place in factories using industrialized methods, and their close-to-site assembly and towing range from a few days to a few weeks, whereas they could take months previously. The other particularity of TetraSpar Demonstrator lies in its stability, ensured by a keel installed 50 m below the float. The deployment of this keel constitutes the main challenge of the installation at sea. Bourbon Subsea Services has thus applied an innovative methodology to connect this keel to the float in the port and to deploy it in complete safety once at sea.

Windfloat Atlantic operation

After supplying and installing the mooring lines, Bourbon Subsea Services towed and connected the third 8.4 MW floating wind turbine of the Windfloat Atlantic project, 20 km from Viana do Castelo on the Portuguese coast. With a total capacity of 25 MW, these are the most powerful floating wind turbines ever installed. In charge of project management and offshore installation engineering, BOURBON has put in place all the maritime and human resources required for the operations of the 3 turbines.

This lump sum project, which envolve engineeering, procurement and offshore installation phases, demonstrates the BOURBON’s expertise in project management and risk management in the emerging floating wind market.

This installation of the world's first semi-submersible floating wind farm is a true human adventure for the men and women who contributed to it. Follow the WindFloat Atlantic adventure exclusively through the voices of the three partners (Bourbon Subsea Services, Vryhof, Principle Power)!

"The rise of floating offshore wind energy" - World Oil (August 2020)

Bourbon Subsea Services' participation in the large-scale WindFloat Atlantic project - a turning point for floating wind turbines - now positions the group as the European leader in the installation of offshore wind turbines. The fact that the leading magazine of Oil&Gas World Oil asked BOURBON in August 2020 for a white paper on offshore wind energy is the perfect illustration of this.

The fact that the leading magazine of Oil&Gas World Oil asked BOURBON in August 2020 for a white paper on offshore wind energy is the perfect illustration of this. This article not only comes back to the progress of the WindFloat Atlantic project, but also provides a portrait of the wind energy industry, its challenges and opportunities.

Thanks to its experience in the installation of floating wind turbines, Bourbon Subsea Services was able to quickly and efficiently implement the engineering phase of this turnkey project, initiated in May 2018. The deployment of all operational phases, including the towing of the float to Dundee, the pre-installation of the 4-line mooring system and the installation of the fully assembled turbine on site, was optimized by using the local supply chain.

BOURBON's project team worked closely with Cobra Wind, the prime contractor, Principle Power, the designer of the semi-submersible floating foundations, and Vryhof, the supplier of the anchoring system.
